Ray Scungio began working for Groov-Pin 16 years ago in the Davenport Department. Today, he is the department head of the CNC Swiss Machines, Escomatics, and Brown & Sharpes for our subsidiary, Precision Turned Components (PTC), in Smithfield, Rhode Island. PTC manufactures precision turned connector bodies, fittings, and other complex parts for various industries including Aerospace, Defense, Fluid and Gas Control, and Telecommunications.

Groov-Pin employees value working for the company for different reasons and Ray appreciates that employees always have everything they need to get the job done. “I also appreciate that they like to try new things to expand the business. They bring in new types of work,” he said.

Daily, his responsibilities include setting up and maintaining nine Escomatics, two CNC Swiss Machines, three secondary operation machines, and one first operation Brown & Sharpe. There are other operators who run these machines, but if an issue arises, Ray is the one who fixes it.

Groov-Pin often works with interns from local schools and Ray encourages them to keep working and learn different skills. “If you get good at your job, you’ll be skilled labor. Now, the work is coming back, but there aren’t as many people to do it.” He also stresses the importance of having a combination of CNC and manual machine experience. “You have to know how to be hands-on,” he said.

To be competitive, you have to make parts quickly and get them to the customer on time. Every day, he makes sure those parts meet quality standards. “If I’m buying something, I expect top quality so I want to deliver that to our customers. I want them to know we can make parts better than overseas.”
